What Happens During Paint Correction
Paint correction is not a quick buff. It is a slow, careful process of levelling the clear coat, the thin clear layer that sits on top of your car’s colour, so that light reflects off it evenly again. Here is roughly how a correction job runs:
- Wash and decontaminate. The car gets a thorough wash, then the paint is clayed smooth to pull out bonded grit and fallout that washing leaves behind. Polishing over that grit would just drag it across the paint.
- Inspect under light. Swirls and scratches hide in the shade. We look at the paint under direct light to see what is really there and how deep it goes.
- Polish in stages. Depending on the package, the paint gets one, two or three stages of machine polishing. Each stage uses a different pad and polish combination, starting more cutting and finishing finer.
- Check and protect. Once the finish looks right, the paint is protected. Every package on this page finishes with wax.
Not every scratch can come out
This is the honest part. If a scratch catches your fingernail, it has probably gone through the clear coat. Polishing can soften how it looks, but it cannot remove it without taking off more clear coat than is safe. Paint chips are the same: they need touch-up paint, not polish. We would rather tell you that up front than promise a result the paint cannot give.
Paint Correction or Ceramic Coating?
People often ask which one they need. The short answer is that they do different jobs.
Paint correction fixes the paint you already have. It removes swirls, light scratches and dull, oxidised paint.
A ceramic coating protects paint. It does not remove defects. Put a coating on swirled paint and the swirls stay, sealed underneath and often easier to see because the gloss goes up.
So if your paint looks hazy or spider-webbed in the sun, correction comes first. If your car is new or the paint is already in good shape, you may only need a light polish before protection. Many owners do both: correct the paint, then coat it so it stays that way.

Paint Correction Before Paint Protection Film
Paint protection film (PPF) is clear, so it shows whatever is underneath it. Swirls, wash marks and light scratches stay visible through the film, and once it is on, they are sealed in.
That is why we check the paint before any PPF install and correct it where needed. Correction gives the film a clean, glossy base, and the film then protects that finish from rock chips and road debris.

Paint Correction Before Icon Rocklear
Icon Rocklear is a protective coating that bonds to your paint, so the same rule applies: it locks in the finish you already have.
Correcting the paint first means the coating seals in clean, glossy paint rather than swirls and haze. If you are thinking about Rocklear, ask us to look at your paint first and we will tell you honestly whether it needs correcting.

Why Tacoma Paint Needs Correcting
Most of the swirls we see around Tacoma come from washing, not driving. Wet months mean more trips through automatic car washes, and spinning brushes full of grit from other cars leave fine circular scratches. Road film and winter road treatment add to it, and a gritty towel finishes the job.
Summer brings its own wear. UV fades and dulls paint over the years, especially on older cars parked outside, and tree sap and bird droppings left too long can etch into the clear coat.
Keeping it looking right afterwards
- Hand wash with two buckets, one for soapy water and one to rinse the mitt.
- Use a clean microfibre towel to dry, and skip the brush car wash if you can.
- Get sap and bird droppings off quickly, before they bake in.
- Think about a coating. Corrected paint without protection will pick up new swirls over time.

Paint Correction FAQs
Look at the paint in direct sunlight. Fine circular swirls on a newer, cared-for car often need only Level 3. Visible car wash marks usually point to Level 4. Paint that has been faded and scratched for years is Level 5 territory. The quickest way to know for sure is a free quote, where we look at your car in person.
Yes, a small amount. That is how it works. It is why we check the paint first and do not chase every last mark on thin or older paint.
No. A chip has lost paint, so it needs touch-up paint. Polishing helps scratches that sit in the clear coat, not missing paint.
That depends on how the car is washed afterwards. Gentle hand washing and a protective coating keep the finish looking corrected far longer than repeated trips through a brush car wash.
